Joe Calzaghe retained his WBO super-middleweight title 25 years ago today, stopping American contender Will McIntyre in the fourth round at Parken Stadium in Copenhagen on 13 October 2001. It was the first time the Welshman had defended the belt outside Britain.

Calzaghe put McIntyre down in the third round with a left uppercut. McIntyre beat the count, but Calzaghe dropped him again at the start of the fourth, and the referee stopped the fight 45 seconds into the round.

The defence formed part of the undercard for Mike Tyson against Brian Nielsen in the Danish capital, taking Calzaghe's title onto a heavyweight bill abroad.

It was his second stoppage win of 2001. He had opened the year by beating Mario Veit, the unbeaten German No 1 contender with a 30-0 record, in the first round. The McIntyre result meant Calzaghe had needed fewer than five rounds across his two defences that year.

Calzaghe boxed professionally from 1993 to 2008. During that career he held unified and lineal titles at super-middleweight and won the Ring magazine light-heavyweight title, becoming a world champion in two weight classes.
