Reid, Burton and Thomas all beaten in European Boxing Championships finals

Great Britain's three finalists at the European Boxing Championships all lost, leaving Chantelle Reid, Abdul Burton and Damar Thomas with silver medals and the team still without a gold.

Great Britain's three finalists at the European Boxing Championships were all beaten, with Chantelle Reid, Abdul Burton and Damar Thomas each taking silver, BBC Sport reported.

It was a different week for Ireland in Sofia, where Roscommon's Lisa O'Rourke won the 80kg title on Thursday, as we reported, and Belfast's Michaela Walsh took bronze.

Thomas came closest to gold. The 21-year-old Commonwealth champion lost 3-2 to Russia's David Surov in a tight men's super-heavyweight final, the last bout of the day.

Reid and Burton were both beaten 5-0. Reid, a Commonwealth Games silver medallist, lost the light-middleweight final to Turkey's Busenaz Surmeneli. She said: “I'm happy to come away with a silver, obviously would've preferred a gold but I shared the ring with a really good opponent.” Reid, who had four fights at the tournament, said she believed she had performed as well as she could and was keen to face Surmeneli again.

Burton, 20, lost to Russian Viacheslav Rogozin in the men's super-bantamweight final and was emotional in his post-fight interview. He said: “It's not the gold I aimed for, but silver in my first major, I'm still happy.” He added: “I'll learn from it and come back. Five fights out here against top kids, it's been a great experience. To step up to seniors from the under-23s, I'm happy, it's never nice to lose but I will move on.” GB took 15 boxers to the championships and have five medals but no gold, with Callum Makin and Dimeji Shittu having won bronze on Thursday.
