TYSON, Netflix's four-part documentary series on Mike Tyson, is out now. It premiered on 13 October and runs across four hour-long episodes.

The series follows Tyson from his chaotic upbringing in Brooklyn, New York, to winning the heavyweight title at 20, the youngest heavyweight champion in history. The series runs up to his return to the ring against Jake Paul in 2024.

It is directed by Floyd Russ, whose credits include Netflix's Untold, and features interviews with Tyson and people close to him. Bill Simmons and Jim Gray are among the executive producers.

"Most people are too scared to look at their lives objectively, wanting to paint themselves as the hero of their own story," Tyson said in Netflix's announcement. "But if we are truly objective, we know we can never be the hero in our own story. We have to be able to face the man in the mirror — taking the good with the bad — to give a full account of our contributions in this life."

Russ told Netflix's Tudum that the crew interviewed Tyson about eight times over eight to 12 months, including trips to Brownsville, the Catskills gym where he learned to box, Las Vegas and his home in Florida. "It's a new perspective because he just turned 60," Russ said. "[Tyson's] been California sober, off hard drugs and liquor for over 10 years now."

Russ said four archival producers spent 16 months gathering footage. Near the end of the fourth episode, Tyson and Russ both take the toad, a psychedelic drug. Russ said he once asked Tyson why he fought Paul: "He leans forward and says, 'The toad told me to.'"
