Chev Clarke stopped Chris Billam-Smith in the seventh round, dropping the Bournemouth fighter twice before the referee intervened in a finish Billam-Smith protested.
Clarke, 35, put Billam-Smith down with a heavy right hand. It was the first time Billam-Smith had been knocked down as a professional. He got back to his feet but was floored again, and referee Lee Every waved the contest off after 1min 24sec of the round.
Billam-Smith argued against the decision, and his trainer, Shane McGuigan, was left furious at ringside.
Up to that point, Billam-Smith had pressed forward through the first six rounds and gone to Clarke's body. He said afterwards: “It was a great shot. Made a mistake, but I felt like I was winning the fight.” He added: “All respect to Chev. Tonight was his night, and that’s all that can be said, so congratulations to him and his team.”
