Gable Steveson won Olympic gold in Tokyo with a takedown in the final second. Five years on, Sean Sharaf knocked him out in 12 seconds at UFC 331.

Gable Steveson was losing the Olympic heavyweight freestyle final in Tokyo with seconds to go. He took Geno Petriashvili down with ten seconds left, then again with less than a second on the clock, to win 10-8 and take the gold medal. "I looked at the clock and it was like 0.3," Steveson told the Star Tribune afterwards. It was one of the finishes of the Games.

More than five years later, in only his second UFC fight, Steveson walked into the Octagon at UFC 331 in Los Angeles on 19 September as the heavy favourite against Sean Sharaf. Sharaf knocked him out in 12 seconds. It was the first defeat of Steveson's mixed martial arts career.

The two results sit at either end of the same story: an athlete who kept his composure with the clock running out, then was caught before he had found his range. What Steveson does next will decide which of the two nights defines him.
