Canelo Alvarez is back in possession of the WBC super middleweight title he lost to Terence Crawford in September 2025, after outpointing Christian Mbilli on all three scorecards in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Saturday.
The 12-round decision ended an unbeaten run of 30 professional bouts for Mbilli, whose volume punching had earned him the interim WBC title. That belt was later upgraded following Crawford's retirement, which left Mbilli as the man Alvarez had to beat to become champion again.
The judges returned scores of 115-112, 116-111 and 117-110. Alvarez's record now stands at 64-3-2, while Mbilli drops to 29-1-1.
Alvarez said after the fight: “It’s something unbelievable. It feels like my first title. Now, after 21 years as a professional, 16 years ago I won my first title. Now I won that title again. I’m so proud of my team.” He also joked that his wife had told him not to come home from Saudi Arabia without the belt.
Alvarez did not commit to an opponent or date for what would be his 70th professional fight, saying only that he planned to take a two-week holiday before returning to the gym.
