Oscar De La Hoya says Canelo 'couldn't hold Chávez's jockstrap' after Mbilli 'snoozefest'
The Golden Boy promoter said Canelo and Turki Alalshikh are responsible for "one of the worst eras in boxing" and that he can name 10 other Mexican fighters who are better boxers.

Oscar De La Hoya has told Canelo Alvarez he "couldn't hold Chávez's jockstrap", calling his win over Christian Mbilli in Riyadh "another snoozefest against another opponent nobody asked for".
Speaking in his Clapback Thursday video, the Golden Boy promoter said every fight on the card was "a dud" except for "a brief moment in the 6th round of the Jaime Munguía fight", and asked why viewers "had to wait an hour between fights". He said Alvarez and Turki Alalshikh are responsible for "one of the worst eras in boxing".
"Overpaying fighters who are underdelivering. You got half of what you paid. Fighters are ducking their mandatories and taking forever to fight the very best opponents," De La Hoya said. "I'm so f***ing tired of 100 punches thrown in a whole fight with no action whatsoever. It puts people to sleep."
He said fans miss "those days of Barrera, Morales, Julio César Chávez" and turned on Alvarez directly. "Canelo, you try to proclaim you're the best Mexican fighter ever. Come on, man. Bro, you couldn't hold Chávez's jockstrap ... And I can name 10 other Mexican fighters who are way better boxers than you are," he said.
"You're simply the most popular fighter of this era. Which will go down in history as the worst era of Mexican boxing," De La Hoya added.
Alvarez won the WBC super middleweight title on Saturday night, beating Mbilli by unanimous decision with scores of 115-112, 116-111 and 117-110. It was his first fight since his defeat by Bud Crawford. De La Hoya has also taken aim at Dana White's Zuffa Boxing, saying that from what he hears "the UFC is tanking".
