WBA asks David Benavidez to clarify which world title he intends to pursue

The WBA has requested a decision from David Benavidez over his championship plans, with the American holding titles at both light-heavyweight and cruiserweight.

David Benavidez has been asked by the WBA Championship Committee to clarify which of his titles he intends to continue campaigning for, Boxing News reported.

Benavidez holds the WBA Regular light-heavyweight belt alongside its Super cruiserweight title. He is set to contest a three-belt cruiserweight unification fight in December.

The decision could affect Albert Ramirez, who holds the WBA interim light-heavyweight title. Ramirez could be elevated to Regular champion if the organisation chooses to remove its interim belt at 175lbs.

Benavidez became a cruiserweight champion this year by stopping Gilberto Ramirez to win the WBA Super and WBO titles. That followed a successful defence of his WBC and WBA Regular light-heavyweight belts against Anthony Yarde.

His move to light-heavyweight began in 2024 with a win over Oleksandr Gvozdyk for the WBC interim title. He then beat David Morrell to claim the WBA Regular belt and was subsequently elevated to full WBC champion.
