Islam Makhachev's next welterweight title defence, against Carlos Prates, is reportedly being targeted for UFC 336 at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto on 30 January.

Alvaro Colmenero wrote on X that if negotiations "continue on their course", Prates will face Makhachev at the event. The UFC announced UFC 336 for Scotiabank Arena during its Edmonton broadcast but has not yet named any bouts for the card.

Makhachev, 29-1, won the title with a unanimous decision over Jack Della Maddalena in November 2025 and made his first defence against Ian Garry in August. He has said he wants to fight again before Ramadan, which is expected to begin in early February.

Prates, 24-7, has finished all seven of his UFC wins, and his only defeat in the promotion was a decision against Garry. He knocked out Birmingham's Leon Edwards in the second round at UFC 322 in November 2025 and stopped Della Maddalena in the third round in May.

The Brazilian stands 6ft 1in with a 78-inch reach, giving him three inches of height and 7.5 inches of reach over the 5ft 10in champion. Charles Oliveira has said that Garry had shown Prates the blueprint to beat Makhachev.
